This year, their mission is local.
About 210 local children took the "ride of a lifetime" during the Rolling River Rampage Adventure Week vacation Bible school at the First United Methodist Church, with a goal to raise $1,500 dollars for the NASCAR Foundation.
"It's a whitewater rafting theme where the rafters are traveling from place to place and discovering that they can find adventure, acceptance, joy, peace and rest on their river," said Caitlin Booth, director of children's ministries.
Held from June 18-22, the vacation Bible school had already raised over $1,000 by Thursday. For every $25 raised, one child in Halifax Hospital will receive a teddy bear. Booth, who attended vacation Bible schools in her youth, said she hopes the children will take memories away from the experience, like eating popsicles outside the church and dancing to a specific song with their friends.
"We're just excited to reach out to the community and see all these kids taking the next step in their faith," Booth said.
