Remember you have layers of accountability above you and come home safe every night, Ormond Beach Police Chief Jesse Godfrey told three officers during their promotional ceremony on Friday, Aug. 24.

"It's not just physically going home safe, but I also want you to go home emotionally safe, financially safe and legally safe," Godfrey said.

The three officers — Jay Brennan, David Lank and Micahel Garner — looked solemnly at their chief as he spoke, understanding the responsibilities that they have volunteered to take on. Godfrey read the Police Department's mission statement aloud and said that it ties into what they as law enforcement do on a daily basis:

New ranks:

  • Officer Jay Brennan was promoted to corporal.
  • Officer David Lank was promoted to corporal.
  • Detective Corporal Michael Garner was promoted to Sergeant.

"The mission of the Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in our community and protect our citizens from crime through the provision of effective, efficient and responsive police services," Godfrey read. "Our direction as an agency will be determined in large measure through input from the community we serve. Our actions will be guided by principles of courtesy, respect for the rights of others and diligence in the performance of our duties."

The officers will memorize those words as part of their rise in rank.

Brennan thanked his partner Marianne Durkin as well as his wife for helping him achieve this next step in his law enforcement career. He also addressed kind words to the chief and captains in attendance.

"The only thing I hope is that I do proud by all the current supervisors now — that I don't let you down," Brennan said. "And if ever you see I need a little bit of help, trust me, I'll take it."
