The city of Ormond Beach recognized the veteran community with food, song and dance during its Veterans Day Celebration at the Ormond Beach Senior Center on Thursday, Nov. 9.
An estimated 80 people — veterans, family and city employees — attended the lunch celebration held to honor the men and women who served. From Army veterans to former Marines, each one stood during their branch's anthem to be recognized. The presentation of colors was performed by the Ormond Beach Civil Air Patrol.
The guest speaker at the celebration was Ormond Beach resident John Brinkley, who is president of the Veterans Museum and Education Center in Daytona Beach. He spoke about the museum's exhibits showcasing the cost of freedom in the U.S. paid by members of the military, and the overall theme of liberty in this country.
“This would not be possible without the courage, commitment and sacrifice from our brave men and women who have served or are now serving in our armed forces,” Brinkley said.
Ormond Beach Mayor Bill Partington, prior to reading a proclamation, said the military is a "great equalizer" among U.S. citizens.
“Doesn’t matter your gender, your race, but you come together in the military and you work together with a common goal to defend our great nation,” Partington said.
