Ormond Beach's Environmental Discovery Center now is home to one more tree thanks to the Captain James Ormond of the Daughters of the American Revolution, who donated a new flatwoods plum in celebration of Arbor Day on Friday, April 26.
Regent Dee Clark said the chapter has a conservation committee, in line with other DAR chapters across the country, and that they all plant trees on or around Arbor Day as a result. The chapter had a conservation program at its last meeting, and Clark said it is also working on a butterfly garden project.
The chapter chose the EDC to plant a tree because of it's location in town.
"It’s a beautiful place where not only children can come and learn, but a lot of adults can come and learn," Clark said.
Locals can kayak, walk the gardens and learn about local wildlife, she added. That helps people identify what is native to the area when considering gardening in their own backyards. Residents are blessed to have a place in Ormond Beach like this, she said.
“We need to think about how our trees are such a valued source, and the shade and the homes it gives for everyone," Clark said. "To me, that’s what Arbor Day means, and I think for most of my members.”
