Sandcrabs girls golf looking to rebuild in 2018
Seabreeze High School’s girls golf team graduated two seniors — both regular contributors during matches — last season. The Sandcrabs finished third in districts in 2017 and placed fifth in the regional tournament.
Now, the Sandcrabs are down to one senior, Jordyn Taylor, as they look to rebuild in 2018.
And while the Sandcrabs’ younger players have showed promise so far this season, Schmidt said he has yet to pinpoint a definite No. 1-spot player. High school golf requires the top four scores to be submitted during matches and tournaments. Schmidt has rotated his girls through spots Nos. 1-4, typically playing the lowest scorer from the previous match at the top position.
“You shoot the best scores, you’re going to be playing the No. 1 spot,” he said.
Of the younger girls on the roster, Schmidt said Kaleigh Miller, Erynn Beebe and Bailey McQuarrie, who also starts at quarterback for the Sandcrabs’ flag football team, have stood out.
And although the Sandcrabs are in a rebuilding year, the goal is still to find a way to get out of the district and back into the regional tournament.
"It's all on them and how hard they want to work, how much better they want to get,” Schmidt said. “We're a team, but it's an individual sport. How much time you're putting in is how much you're going to get out of it."
