Golf champs, led by locals
The Executive Women's Golf Association Daytona Beach Chapter team, the 19th Hole Champs, advanced to the final last weekend in Rancho Mirage, California.
The golfers competed against 50 teams from around the country, playing in two-day events, including four-ball and singles matches. The local squad — Melody Kimmel, Katy Nelson, Jackie Poole, Jeanie Schreiber, Lea Buckley, Mimi Lenio, Suzette Sweeny and Pat Larsen — placed 24th, and Sweeny nailed hole-in-one.

Robert Bell signs with Bethune-Cookman
Seabreeze Sandcrab baseball player Robert Bell recently signed his letter of intent to forward his playing career and education at Bethune-Cookman University.
According to Perfect Game scouting, Bell ranks among the highest in the nation in bat speed at impact, hand speed and time to impact, and he's the 2017 ninth-ranked third baseman in Florida.
Bell has played with the Orlando Scorpion Prime, Nation Elite Baseball, and he has earned 2015 and 2016 Perfect Game High Honorable Mention honors.
This past summer, Bell played with the San Francisco Giants' and Toronto Blue Jays' scout teams. Last season, he helped the Sandcrabs win a playoff game in upsetting fashion against Deltona.

Lea Gray places 15th in all-star run
Lady Sandcrabs Lea Gray concluded her cross country high school career with a 15th-place finish at the FACA All-Star Senior Classic on Saturday, Nov. 19, in Tallahassee.
Gray achieved four Top 10 finishes this season, including a district individual championship, running her personal best 19:43. She also led Seabreeze with the highest finish at the state meet earlier this month.

Ready to 'candy cane' run in honor of local Chuck Strasser?
Lace up your sneakers — or elf shoes — for the very first Chuck Strasser Memorial Candy Cane 5K that will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Destination Daytona at 1637 N. US1.
The fun run will be held as a memorial fundraiser to continue the work of Strasser, who died on Jan. 1, 2015, after a fight against cancer.
